      Hi Dr. Woeller,

Would you use malic acid in someone with high tartaric acid and no malate? I’m wondering if side-effects of malic acid supplementation (stomach cramps, bloating) is because they’re analogues and malate is making it worse, or because malate is displacing tartaric acid and creating a detox reaction.

      Thank you,
      Elizma

        Elizma,
I am not sure if those side effects are being driven by a detox reaction to Malic Acid. Malic acid is a also a back up fuel source for the brain when glucose runs low. Tartaric acid can inhibit the fumerase enzyme necessary to produce malic acid. I feel in the case of low to no malate that malic acid is worthwhile.

        Dr. Woeller
