If I’m correct l-glutamine when absorbed can become glutamate. What is your idea about autistic children often having too much glutamate and it not being changed to GABA because of enzymatic problems ultimately causing neurological problems.Would you recommend this product for a child with glutamate problems?
Thanks Gaby

Gaby,
That autism community is always going to be a special situation with regards to supplementation. However, I think the small amount of L-glutamine in a product like Support Mucosa is negligible with regards to significantly increasing the pool of glutamate in the body. Glutamate is one of the most abundant amino acids in the brain so taking it orally is not likely going to do much. However, I have had some extremely sensitive individuals on the autism-spectrum who reacted to even modest amounts of L-glutatmine (500mg), but this is rare. I think the issue is more of an NMDA receptor hyper-sensitivity problem than purely a glutamate issue.I would only avoid it in a child who is very sensitive to supplements. I have given Support Mucosa to some kids without issue.
Sincerely,
Dr. Woeller -

Dr. Woeller,
I encounter the NMDA receptor sensitivity with adult patients and at times taking glutamine raises their fasting blood sugars above normal. Once they stop taking glutamine, FBS returns to normal. I’m already aware of Magnesium, Taurine and Meds that are NMDA inhibitors. Are you or Dr. Tranchitella aware of any safe herbal supplements that reduce the sensitivity of the NMDA receptor?
Thank you,
Kim -

Kim,
Nutritional lithium and L-theanine help to stabilize the NMDA receptors too.L-theanine, an extract of green tea, is also an alpha wave stimulator which can help with relaxation. Adults, 200mg to 400mg daily. With kids 100mg to 200mg daily will be helpful. An adult dose for some really sensitive kids is fine too in my experience.
The Lithium Orotate can help – 10mg to 20mg for adults. 5mg to 10mg for kids. For kids too I also use the Liquid Lithium from New Beginnings – 5 drops daily.
Sincerely,
Dr. WoellerP.S. It is not a bad idea to run a Hair Analysis on people periodically too to check for Lithium levels.

Thanks, Dr. Woeller.
I do run Hair Analysis on adults…almost every adult tested shows low Lithium levels, including myself! -

My son also has low lithium and giving him lithium orate helps. However he stims more on theanine what could be a reason for that do you know?

Gabrielle,
He may have a phenol reaction to this supplement. Are you familiar with phenols?

I am. I just never felt this was a problem, but I just started reading more about it and I learned it can even show problems after 24 or more hours so it’s difficult to say. I realize he does better on tri-enza then other enzymes and I believe this also works against phenols. It’s just real hard what with a GF,CF,SF,cornfree and LOD dieet also to take out high phenol foods 🙁

Yes, it is difficult.
The Tri-Enza has some No-Fenol in it so it will be helpful. Some kids do better with phenols when oxalates are lower and/or the use of Epsom salt cream and/or molybdenum (50mcg daily).
Are you using these?

He has never done well with epsom salts. I suspected that he would have an CBS up regulation because of this but he doesn’t so I can’t explain this. The molybdenum is a good idea he is a bit low in that. I do give spectrum mate and that has some in it. Do you have a brand you would recommend?

Liquid Molybdenum from New Beginnings is good.
