I am getting more inquiries about fecal transplants. From people with significant
gut sx but not c diff. So they don’t qualify for treatment. But are wanting to pursue the do it yourself from healthy family donors. I believe it is not “approved” for anything other than c diff because the govt is behind the science, and it seems a reasonable (though not profitable for Big Pharma) approach. It is an interesting option to pursue. What do you and Dr T think?

        Lorraine,
I do believe the fecal transplant could be a good option for people with some bowel issues not associated with C. difficile. I have always felt this could be worthwhile for many kids on the autism-spectrum. I talked to a fecal transplant specialist a few years ago who admitted it would be helpful, but he wouldn’t even consider it for someone who didn’t have C. difficile. He wasn’t willing to take the risk professionally. That would be my advice. People can do their own research. There is a website called the Power Of Poop that has a lot of information – http://www.powerofpoop.com. What I would say is no matter how it is done the donor needs to be screened. This is discussed in the clostridia module of GI Mastery.

        Sincerely,
        Dr. Woeller
