I have a new, 70 year old client who is returning home from a patient care facility where he has been recovering from bowel obstruction and a bacterial pneumonia (and ongoing COPD). He does not exercise much at all. He is coming home with severe diarrhea. He was tested for clostridia and does not have it. He is taking a probiotic BID that was prescribed by the doc– i will learn more when we talk tomorrow when I take his health history. Should I run an OAT? He does not want to do a stool test, so I’m unsure how else to investigate. Can you offer other suggestions and or considerations?

        Katey,
Absolutely, do an OAT. Many, many people will have clostridia bacteria overgrowth, but no evidence of C. difficle toxins on a stool test.

        Sincerely,
        Dr. Woeller
