Denise,
The Secretory IgA is often high in the presence of infection (i.e. bacteria, yeast), as well as food sensitivities. There may be some inflammation too, but the mucosal immune system should be functional.
With long-standing inflammation and damage along the mucosal barrier though the Secretory IgA can be low even if infections are present.
Generally, the longer the problems in the gut the greater the chance Secretory IgA can be low. The biggest concern is a low Secretory IgA in the presence of infection. If The Secretory IgA is high in the presence of infection than at least you know the mucosal immune system is making an attempt to fight the problem.
Sincerely,
Dr. Woeller
